Martin,

Friends and I including (Matt Jennings the fly's originator) tie it from a size 1 down to a 14, on 2, 3, or 4xl hooks, everyone has their preferences. For sunfish and Guadalupe Bass, I'll primarily throw 10s and 12s. We have a variant of the fly that we refer to as the "Chili bug" that is tied in a copper with a burnt orange tail -- sort of a hybrid of the Matt's Bug and Tony Spezio's Chilipepper.

[General Discussion] Bob Miller's crawfish pattern

Howdy all,

My name is Pat Vanek, I'm the treasurer for the Jack Sparks Central Texas Flyrodders here in Waco. First of all, let me say that ya'll have a very nice website, newsletter etc.

I was going through an old Texas Outdoors Journal magazine the other day, the April, 2001 issue to exact, and I ran across an article on Bob Miller's crawfish pattern. The photo of the fly was black and white, so not much detail could be seen. The tying instructions were a little vague as to the exact placement or tie in points of the marabou and rabbit on the end of the fly. The recipe called for palmered black hackle, however the photo showed what appeared to be palmered marabou or long schlappen hackle. Also, the hook model was not given. The article was written by Jim Kuper. So, I tied up a couple, didn't look half bad, but I want to know how far off I am. I believe that folks come up with patterns over time and have generally worked out all the kinks in them, so, it's best to stick as closely as possible to the original.

So...I googled Mr. Miller's name along with "crawfish" and it took me to your site. I see that Mr. Miller is involved with the Fly Fishing Show in Kerrville in Ocotber (if that's the same Mr. Miller) and Jim Kuper is also a member of your club as well.

I figured you guys and gals fish that fly alot down there, so one of you, or Mr. Miller, or Mr. Kuper would be able to shed some light on it,or send a color photo to my email (PM me for an address please). I'm even willing to trade out a couple of flies if someone could mail a couple of originals of Bob's pattern to me. Looks deadly!

PS, I love Kerrville, used to vacation there as a kid at the HEB lodge south of town. Caught my first fish on a fly in Turtle Creek.

Thank you for all your help, and if ya'll don't mind, I might mention to our club that ya'll are having the Fly Fishing Show in Ocotber to see if we can help participate in any way.

The McGinty is a yellow and black banded fly that has probably been around about 75 plus years at least. I tie a version of this fly I call a Bumble Bee. I tie it on a Mustad 3906-#10 hook, Gold bead, Black thread, Tail - Black tuff of marabou, Body - Sm. Yellow chenille and sm. Black Chenille. Hackle - one or two wraps of partridge.
Tie on the tail then tie in the yellow chenille. Take one or two wraps of the yellow, tie down but do not cut. Advance the yellow by wrapping over the yellow chenille with the thread forming a small gap. Tie in the black chenille and fill in the gap with one or two wraps, tie off and cut the black chenille. Advance the thread. Make one or two turns with the yellow again and tie off at the bead. Tie in the hackle.
Fish this fly by itself or put in on a dropper under a foam fly. I won`t call it a sure thing but its very close.

GOTTA LOVE YOUR DAD

I took my dad to the mall the other day. We decided to grab a bite at the food court. I noticed he was watching a teenager sitting next to him. The teenager had spiked hair in all different colors: green, red, orange, blue, and so forth. My dad just kept staring at him. The teenager would look up and catch him staring every time.

When the teenager finally had enough, he sarcastically asked, “What’s the matter old man, have you never done anything wild in your life?”

Knowing my Dad, I quickly swallowed my food so that I would not choke on his response; I knew he’d have a good one. In classic style, he did not bat an eye in his response.

“Got drunk once and had sex with a peacock.

I was just wondering if you were my son.”

Bill,
I enjoyed your post. I took special note on the fact that the fish didn't start taking until the wind picked up. It aroused my curiosity as to how wind affects fish behavior.
I think that you may have had a carp on your line. They make a strong, determined pull and are big enough to challenge any angler to turn them when they make a run, especially with a fly rod. I've battled a few and can recall only one that I managed to hang in with long enough to bring to my side.
Walter Saunders is our club expert on catching carp, but he doesn't fool around with computers and posting. Ask him about carp fishing the next time you see him at a monthly meeting. He has some tales to tell.

At 12:00 the wind picked up,the air became cooler and we caught 17 trout in the next 2 hours.
I hooked something that ran like a bonefish, taking me into my backing and breaking-off. I could not turn it. Have any of you hooked anything like that or have an idea what would behave in that manner?

“Have you ever done anything of particular merit?” St. Peter asked.

“Well, I can think of one thing”, the angler offered.

“Once, on a trip to the Black Hills out in South Dakota, I came upon a gang of bikers who were threatening a young woman. I directed them to leave her alone, but they would not listen. So, I approached the largest and most heavily tattooed biker and smacked him in his face, kicked over his bike, ripped out his nose ring, and threw it on the ground. Then, I yelled, “Now back off!!, Or, I’ll kick the crap out of all of you!”

St. Peter was impressed.

“When did this happen?” he asked.

“Just a couple of minutes ago.”

Dianne and I just returned from 4 weeks in Colorado. Aot of water this year but the fishing was fair. We fished 14 days and averaged 17 fish per day. In general the fish seemed smaller but I did catch the bigest stream Brook Trout I have ever seen. It was 16 1/2 inches and caught in a relatively small stream that our friend Danny Wheat also fished. How has your summer been?

Bill,
What a neat report on a splendid outing! What fly fisher would not like and adventure such as you were daring enough to try. I hope a lot of our fly-fishing friends read your post and try to match it with their own experiences during this rare year of continuous rain.
I don't know if my float tube would be too "iffy" to try, but you know that I'm always glad to learn something new about our sport when we share an outing. You may turn out to be our club guide for fishing on the upper South Llano.

Best regards,
Mike

[Fishing Reports] A fine morning on the Llano

Steve Brown’s forecast for clouds and rain on Thursday did not materialize in the Hill Country, so I was off to the Llano. A second flood in as many months had re-arranged the river bed again, and every bend in the river presented new water. The first fish was the big fish of the day, a 2 pound largemouth coming from nowhere and darting in and out of the undercut banks and across the strong current. The remainder of the morning was quantity over quality. All fish were in slack water next to the deep current. Lunch time came, and I could not find a place to sit. I did not want to stand to eat, and I did not want to sit on a log with the rattlers and chiggers. I settled on a new gravel bar in the form of a bench, including a footrest, right at the edge of some slack but clear water. As I ate, I saw what I thought was a typical 5 inch sunfish finning around about 30 feet out. The black spots indicated it was a Rio Grande. After I finished eating, I thought it was worth a cast. I recalled that Kevin Hutchinson said at last month’s meeting that Rio’s prefer black flies, but I did not want to re-tie. While still sitting, I got off a decent cast without too much commotion. The water exploded, and I eventually hauled in the 10 inch monster. Similar to the Nueces River, estimating size and distance under water on the Llano can be deceiving. The fish never hesitated while going after the white marabou streamer. I enclose a photo, but I was disappointed that much of its beautiful color faded in the short amount of time it took to get my camera out and in position.

How are we going to deal with three more months of this exceptional weather?

[Fishing Reports] South Llano float

I fished the South Llano last week and had a “different” experience. I went to the Second Crossing at Telegraph and went upstream. The water was high and over the low-water crossing, something I have never seen. There were some kayakers there, and there were having a blast in the high water. They went downstream, and I went upstream. The water was fast but clear. I had anticipated this and brought two trolling motors, one for the front and one for the rear of my kickboat. I had 64 pounds of thrust on a 6 foot pontoon boat, and there were stretches I had to wade and tow with a rope because the motors could not make a dent in the current. Because of the difficult access and high flows, no one seems to have fished this stretch in several months, not even the locals. I went upstream as far as I dared and then floated back to the truck, keeping the boat in fishing position with my kick fins. In stretches, I caught bass about every 50 yards as I cruised along effortlessly in the Ozark-style current. The bass, although small in the 8 to 12 inch category, were like little green bolts of lightning coming out from underneath the brush and undercut banks. I caught one nice largemouth of about 2 pounds that made long runs and jumped four times in the big pool. I floated over three 25 pound carp. One was a freak or an albino or may have been a Coy. Whatever they were, they were ugly and not afraid of me. I did not try to catch them.

I intend to make this trip again soon, before temperatures hit 100. This may be any day. If anyone would like to make the trip, I would enjoy the company. You will need something to float on, and it won’t be easy. I should be able to tow you to the good spots. The float downstream is a cinch. There are plenty places for safe wading if you want to split up. There is so much “new” water that every area will have to be explored throroughly. The crossing at Texas Tech University looks like a meandering western trout stream. That is what I like about this area. There are no discarded tires, beer cans, or diapers to ruin the view.
